ABOUT RICHARD SAUERMAN · THE ORIGINAL BRAND GUY

Richard Sauerman

The brand guy who spent 40 years telling organisations who they are, until he finally had to answer the question himself.

Richard Sauerman, The Original Brand Guy

For four decades, Richard Sauerman has proven one undeniable truth: the brand is always the person.

Known globally as The Original Brand Guy, and ranked #7 in the Global Top 30 Brand Gurus for 2026 (listed every year since 2014), Richard has worked across every category imaginable. He has built brands for Coca-Cola and Microsoft, and led major internal culture and repositioning transformations for QBE, CSIRO, Data61, Munich Re, Breast Cancer Trials and the RSPCA.

After 18 years inside the world’s most powerful ad agencies (Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy, DDB, McCann), he arrived at a conclusion he refuses to soften for anyone: branding is a leadership matter, not a marketing one.

The brands that win are the ones where the people inside them know exactly who they are.

The Philosophy

A humanist in a boardroom.

Richard has an MA in English Literature & Philosophy, not marketing. He is a thinker and a humanist with a lifelong fascination with the human condition. That is not a biographical footnote; it is the actual reason he does this work.

Most companies treat their brand as something the marketing department produces: a logo, a tagline, a campaign. Richard treats it as something leadership decides, every day, in how they treat their people and each other. Your brand is not the words on the careers page. It is your purpose, vision and values made visible in everything you do and say.

Brand strategy, done properly, isn’t about market share. It is about creating the conditions people need to do their best work and live their fullest lives. When people are given permission to be who they actually are at work, instead of who the org chart says they should be, the shift is instantaneous: performance follows identity.

The Methodology

Finding the truth, fast.

Over 40 years, Richard built something most consultants never bother to: a repeatable pattern for finding the truth inside an organisation, fast.

What changes every time is what he finds. Sometimes an organisation needs a complete rebrand built from zero. Sometimes they just need to “sharpen the saw”, updating language that has gone stale. And sometimes, like his engagement with Sunnyfield, there is no marketing involved at all: just pure, internal culture alignment to close the gap between what the CEO wants and what the staff deliver.

Richard doesn’t arrive with a finished answer. He arrives with a framework for finding the real one.

“I see what you don’t see. That’s my job: to come in and see the things that you don’t see, because what you need to do is right there, but no one sees it.”

— Richard
The Personal Reckoning

Who are you, really?

For 40 years, Richard sat in boardrooms and asked every client the same uncompromising question: Who are you, really?

He spent a career helping companies discover their true identity, but he had never seriously looked at his own. Then, at 63, an ADHD diagnosis made the question impossible to avoid. The man who had spent a career unlocking identity in other people’s organisations realised he had been working against his own.

He had to take his own medicine.

The Transformation Arc
  1. 01

    The Architect

Four decades spent helping organisations define their identity and find their place in the world, spanning the world’s biggest agencies and more than 200 tier-one brands.

  2. 02

    The Diagnosis

At 63, the realisation that he was navigating his own life with the handbrake on. He ran his own Discovery phase on himself.

  3. 03

    The Ultimate Reality Test (MAFS)

Becoming the oldest groom in Married at First Sight (Season 11) history wasn’t a PR stunt. It was a live demonstration of the very thing he had been teaching CEOs for decades: when you know exactly who you are, you stop performing safety and start living conviction.

  4. The Brand Guy

A consultant and speaker who closes the gap between identity and performance. When identity and behaviour align, performance follows. In people. In teams. In organisations. That is where culture, leadership and brand become one system.

Why He Does This

Not because corporate branding is interesting.

Richard doesn’t do this work because corporate branding is interesting. He does it because watching a person, a leadership team or an entire organisation finally tell the truth about who they are is one of the most powerful catalysts for human and business performance he has ever seen.

The Proof

Don’t take his word for it.
